This beautiful tjalk was built in 1893 at the Pattje yard, in Warmenhuizen, for freight transport in the Baltic. She later became a houseboat.
She was converted to a chartership in 1987 and people have been enjoying wonderful sailing holidays on board the Larus for many years.
The Larus is a sporty and trustworthy ship under all weather conditions. The experienced and enthusiastic crew help you experience the “sailing of old” and teach you the tricks of the trade.
A trip to the Wadden islands, sailing past the old IJsselmeer ports or beaching on a sandbank; all this in one of the most beautiful areas of Europe, the Wadden Sea.
Welcome aboard the Larus.

Tom became a skipper through a special coincidence. During his studies in graphic engineering, he worked as a sailor on various yachts on the waters of Zeeland. During his working life, Tom spent every summer and holiday on a ship as a mate, fascinated by life on the water, freedom and adventure. In his last job as manager in a cardboard factory, he had not been happy for some time. One day at work, he heard the song ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ by The Verve and drifted off to sea. Literally after the song ended, Tom got a call from a skipper asking him if he wanted to become a regular sailor on his ship. Tom did not have to think about that for long and so it happened. Since that time, Tom has sailed on several ships and since 2004 he is a member of the Historic Sailing Association of Harlingen. Since 2008, Tom sails the Larus and since 2011 he is the owner of the ship, together with his wife Anke.
