Historical holiday on a sailing ship

Discover the turbulent (war) history of the Wadden Sea region aboard a Baltic Tjalk from 1893: the Larus. The history-loving skipper Tom will take you on a journey aboard his ship to fascinating destinations with captivating stories. During this fully catered trip, you can also lend a hand with hoisting the sails – no experience needed!

Between activities, there is plenty of time to relax or explore the destinations on your own.

Het programma van deze historische vakantie in het Waddengebied

Landlubber, please note: a ship sails where the wind takes her. The programme below is just an example. The exact programme will only be determined on board according to the tide.

In the evening, you are expected in Harlingen to board your accommodation and mode of transport for this holiday. While enjoying a welcome drink and snack, you’ll meet the other guests and the crew. The skipper will introduce you to the ship, life on board, and the sailing trip, after which you can settle into your cabin.

The next morning, after a delicious breakfast, the ship will leave the harbour of Harlingen and sail towards the first destination: Terschelling. The route passes through channels and along sandbanks. Along the way, a hearty lunch will be served. After the sailing trip, the ship will dock in the harbour of West-Terschelling. A visit to the Tigerstellung, including an extensive guided tour, is not to be missed. You’ll learn about life on the Wadden Islands during World War II and discover that the differences between Texel and Terschelling are greater than you might expect.

But Terschelling has more secrets to reveal, such as the English Fury of 1666, which caused the Netherlands more damage than the Spanish Treasure Fleet ever brought in. By bike (rental included), we’ll explore the island and visit historical highlights like the Stryp Cemetery and the Wreck Museum in Formerum to uncover more of its history.

Depending on the weather, the rest of the route will be charted. Regardless, it will undoubtedly be an extraordinary journey.

On Vlieland, the Atlantic Wall stretches further. However, long before that, the Vlieree was one of the most important waterways connecting the Zuiderzee to the North Sea. Texel is home to the remnants of Fort De Schans, which served both William of Orange and Napoleon. Here, the Second World War only ended on 20 May 1945, following the Georgian uprising.

As we cross the Wadden Sea again, we may set course for Kornwerderzand, where the casemates of the Kornwerderzand defensive line once protected us from German invasion. From here, just 225 soldiers bravely resisted the German attack from the Doove Balg.

Wherever the wind takes us, you’ll find fascinating history waiting to be discovered. On the final morning, the ship will return to the harbour of Terschelling, where you’ll disembark with a suitcase full of knowledge, experiences, and impressions.
